The MIT Club of Northern California has kicked off a contest seeking out the best “Clean technology.” According to their website, [1] California Clean Tech Open:

“Clean technology — innovations that are both economically feasible and environmentally friendly — will make a difference in our world. That much is given. “How soon” and “who benefits” are still open questions. . . We at the California Clean Tech Open believe California can and should be the leader in this critical industry sector.”

“The California Clean Tech Open encourages the development of clean technology companies that foster a healthy natural environment — companies that provide environmental benefits in the areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency, pollution reduction and resource protection and conservation. The competition also serves as a platform to educate the public as well as the participants about the environmental challenges we face and new technologies that can provide solutions to those challenges.”

The winner will walk away with $100,000. The judges also will select one winner from each of the five categories:

  1. Energy Efficiency
  2. Smart Power
  3. Renewable Energy
  4. Transportation
  5. Water Management

These folks will receive $50,000 cash and a bundle of professional services.

Contestants must submit an application that includes an executive summary of the business concept. The applications will be screened, and the contestants behind the best applications will be asked to make a presentation to the judging panel. The judges will select approximately 10 finalists who will be required to submit full business plans.

The application period opens on April 17, and applications are due by May 19, 2006.
